Pavements along King Street and Uxbridge Road in Hammersmith and Shepherd’s Bush are being widened to allow shoppers to maintain social distancing.

Hammersmith and Fulham Council said work began this Thursday (23 April) to install temporary barriers and weighted cones that will reduce the width of the roads.

The temporary changes will be complete by Friday and will take roads down from two-lane to one-lane, or 3.5 metres-wide, for vehicles.

New signs will be installed to inform drivers and pedestrians of the changes.

On Uxbridge Road, the council said there will be “green plastic road barriers for 35 metres from Tunis Road (outside Amal Express food store)”.

The south side of Uxbridge Road will have “green plastic road barriers for 50 metres from Devonport Road to St Stephens Avenue”.

Sections of the cycle lands on both sides of Uxbridge Road will close to make space for the wider pavements.

Along the south side of King Street, green barriers will be placed for 30 metres from outside Iceland going west.

Long stretches of King Street and Uxbridge Roads will be given white pavement markings with two metres spaces to help people social distance while queueing for shops.

The council’s cabinet member for the environment, Wesley Harcourt, said: “We are determined to do everything we can to keep residents safe during this crisis.

“People have told us they want to be able to queue safely when doing essential shopping. These temporary measures will do just that and put their health first.”
