Developer Sets Starting Date for King Street Regeneration Scheme

Work will begin rebuilding Town Hall area in second half of 2015

The partnership behind plans to regenerate King Street and Hammersmith Town Hall has set a date for starting work.

Developer Helical Bar has announced it intends to start work on its huge £150m regeneration scheme in the second half of 2015.

In a statement to the City this morning the developer has confirmed that its King Street scheme, which is being developed in partner with developer Grainger, will start on site in 2015 and is due to be completed by the end of 2019.

The mixed-use development will include 196 apartments, a three screen cinema, retail space, restaurant and café space and replacement offices for the local council.

There will also be a new public square.

King Street Regeneration, as the joint venture between Grainger plc and Helical Bar plc is called, says the plans aim to "enhance annd improve the area around the existing Hammersmith Town Hall".

The scheme has had a bumpy rider, with original plans strongly opposed by local residents, who formed a campaign group called Save Our Skyline and were refused by Mayor Boris Johnson for breaching planning rules in December 2011.

There was also a second campaign to save the Cineworld Cinema opposite the Town Hall, but this will be demolished as part of the scheme.

In July 2012 the then Council Leader Nicholas Botterill admitted that the plans had "got it wrong" and that the scheme would be revised.

The revised plans were finally granted planning permission in November 2013.
