Weather Puts Paid to Saturday Football Matches

Fulham and Chelsea games cancelled

The adverse weather conditions have caused the cancellation of both Chelsea and Fulham Football Clubs' matches on Saturday January 9.

Fulham FC were due to play Portsmouth at home at Craven Cottage, but have issued this statement: "The Club can confirm that Saturday’s Barclays Premier League fixture against Portsmouth at the Cottage has been postponed due to the adverse weather conditions which are not expected to improve over the next 24 hours.

" The safety of supporters is of paramount importance to the Club and following an inspection of the areas surrounding Craven Cottage on Friday morning it was deemed unsafe for fans to travel.

"The Club can confirm that all tickets for Saturday’s game will be valid for the re-arranged fixture date which will be announced in due course."

Chelseas's away game at Hull City has also been postponed due to the weather. The club have issued this statement: " Supporters with tickets for the game who are NOT on the UK away scheme can apply for a refund by returning the tickets to the box office (NOT less than two hours before kick off on a home matchday) with credit card details and a full refund including booking fees will be made.

" Supporters who wish to attend the re-arranged date when it is announced are advised to keep the tickets as they will remain valid.Supporters on the UK away scheme will NOT be able to claim a refund."

Premier League rules state that League matches cannot be postponed or abandoned except with the approval of the referee or by order of the police or other authority exercising its statutory powers to that effect.

A Premier League spokesman said: 'It is unfortunate that these matches have had to be called off, however the advice from the statutory authorities in light of continuing adverse weather conditions was to postpone.

" Clearly the safety of supporters in these circumstances is paramount and the League and clubs have acted quickly to ensure as few unnecessary journeys are undertaken as possible.

" The Premier League will work with the clubs concerned to reschedule postponed fixtures as soon as practically possible."
