Met Office Warns of Heavy Snow to Come

Public advised to take extreme care

The Met Office has issued a warning that London faces very heavy snowfall from 8pm tonight, Tuesday January 5, continuing until at least 11am on the morning of Wednesday January 6.

The Met says there is a high risk of an extreme weather event affecting parts of Southern England this evening and overnight. A period of exceptionally heavy snowfall is expected, with accumulations of 15-30 cm and perhaps in excess of 40 cm.

This is expected to cause widespread disruption to the transport network and could lead to problems with power supplies.

Temperatures meanwhile will remain freezing, and with strengthening winds, could drop to well below zero during the day on Friday, when further snow is expected.

The public are advised to take extreme care and refer to the Highways Agency for further advice on traffic disruption on motorways and trunk roads.

We will bring you further weather and travel news as it happens.
