Young Wheelchair Users Invited to Skills Workshop

Organised by charity Go Kids Go at Burlington Danes Academy

Young wheelchair users from across our borough are invited to attend a special skills workshop to help them become more independent.

Organised by national charity Go Kids Go, which specialises in disability awareness training and wheelchair skills workshops, the event takes place at Burlington Danes Academy,Wood Lane in White City, on Saturday June 4 from 10am until 2pm.

On the workshop, youngsters will be taught how to cope with slopes and rough ground and balancing on the back wheel, as well as learning about road safety and emergency evacuation techniques.

" This is a great chance for young wheelchair users in H&F to boost their confidence, gain some invaluable skills and become more independent," says Cllr Sue Fennimore, H&F Council Cabinet Member for Social Inclusion.

It’s not all serious though, as besides learning new skills, participants will also get the chance to take part in sports like wheelchair basketball or to try out wheelchair dance.

Extra chairs will be provided so family and friends can attend and join in the games.

The workshop is open to mixed abilities, but participants will need to be able to self-propel to get the most out of it. Previous young people have varied in age from two years old to 21.

Among those who have attended the charity’s workshops in the past is TV presenter Ade Adepitan, who was recently on our television screens presenting from the 2016 Invictus Games. He is now the charity’s patron.

Go Kids Go run also runs free manual and powered wheelchair workshops, as well as practical wheelchair skills workshops for professionals and disability awareness workshops in schools.

Call 01482 887163 to reserve a place or email roy@gokidsgo.org.uk. The workshop is open to anyone two to 18 years-old and those taking part are asked to bring a packed lunch.
