Simon Rodway's walks conclude with Christian the lion houses
A series of free walking tours exploring some cultural highlights in Hammersmith & Fulham concludes with a tour of the 'lion houses' of Fulham.
On Saturday 13th September Blue Badge guide Simon Rodway will explore the King’s Road
south side, and the
Peterborough Estate. Laid
out by builder Jimmy Nichols
in the 1890s, these
handsome red brick villas are
adorned with Nichols’
trademark terracotta
lions, hence ‘lion houses.’
The tour ends with the lion
man himself, John
Rendall, who in the
1960s bought a lion cub
Christian, from Harrods
and later released him
into the wild via George
Adamson’s Born Free
Foundation in Kenya.
The walk starts at 2pm. Meet outside Fulham Broadway Station on the pedestrian footway. Booking is required.
To book a place, email: nicki.burgess@lbhf.gov.uk or mohamad.haniff@lbhf.gov.uk or telephone 020 8753 5695 or 020 8753 273.
Hammersmith & Fulham Council's cabinet member for economic development and regeneration, Cllr Andrew Jones, says: "This borough is an incredible place with an interesting history and variety of cultural gems – many of which are currently under-appreciated.
"These free events are a great way for both new and longstanding residents to learn more about and enjoy their area."
