Hammersmith Bridge to Close During Festive Period
Shut on 28 and 28 December for survey work ahead of refurbishment in 2018
The 130-year-old bridge will be closed to traffic on Thursday 28 December and Friday 29 December from 8am to 6pm to allow essential surveying work to take place, as part of the preparations for a major refurbishment late in 2018.
H&F Council says these dates were chosen as the roads are much quieter during the holidays.
“We’ve chosen these dates to minimise the disruption to residents and road users while this key work takes place,” said Cllr Wesley Harcourt, H&F Cabinet Member for Environment, Transport and Residents’ Services.
“This closure is essential for us to work out details for the full refurbishment and will be one of several short closures we’ll need to do as part of this surveying. The other closures will be in the new year.
“We apologise in advance for the inconvenience.”
Hammersmith Bridge is currently operating under severe weight restrictions with only one bus in each direction permitted on the bridge at any one time. This renovation work is crucial to ensuring this very old bridge can continue to operate effectively in the future.
Motorists will be diverted via Chiswick Bridge and Putney Bridge. One footway will remain open to pedestrians and cyclists, who will have to dismount to cross.
The following bus services will terminate in Castelnau, Barnes: 33, 209, 485. While the 419 will terminate in Lonsdale Road, Barnes. Passengers can walk across the bridge to resume their journeys.
Some 72 bus services will be diverted via Chiswick Bridge, the remainder will terminate before Hammersmith Bridge – please check before travelling.
