Lyric Celebrates Funding Boost for Studio Theatre

Money from SUEZ Communities Trust will provide new seating, lighting and security

The Lyric Hammersmith has received a funding boost of £18,336 from SUEZ Communities Trust to support the installation of a higher capacity retractable seating stand as part of the wider refurbishment of the Lyric’s Studio Theatre project.

As we reported last month both the Lyric's main auditorium and the Studio are to be given a major facelift, with the Studio being modernised and completely rewired for the first time since its initial build in 1979.

Now the refurbishment will include installation of new seating funded by SUEZ Communities Trust which will enable more flexible and intensive use of the space; as well as installation of a low energy lighting grid and fixtures; repairs to floor and redecoration; installation of swipe-card security and remodelling of the existing entrance to add profile to the studio programme.

The Studio will temporarily close mid-June after Stuff and Nonsense Theatre Company’s production of The Gingerbread Man and reopen in September 2018.

Sian Alexander, Executive Director at the Lyric Hammersmith says: "The Lyric’s Studio Theatre is a place where children and young people can train, perform, experience great theatre and create their own.

"It’s a highly valued community resource used by thousands of children, young artists, schools and community groups each year.

"We are grateful to SUEZ Communities Trust for their support to ensure that this space will be both safe and accessible as well as fit for purpose as a modern, flexible, high quality performance venue that raises the aspirations of all the children and young people who come through our doors."

Marek Gordon, Chairman of SUEZ Communities Trust adds: "SUEZ Communities Trust provides grants through the Landfill Communities Fund. This important source of funding has been available since 1997 and has provided such worthy projects with more than £1.4 billion.

"We were delighted to be able to offer funding to Lyric Hammersmith."
