Hammersmith's Summer Festival Continues in July

Today catch tennis from Wimbledon and Carmen from the Royal Opera House

Hammersmith's annual Summer Festival, now in its 13 year, is back with events continuing through July, starting with two weeks of tennis from Wimbledon and a free screening of Carmen from the Royal House on Lyric Square's big screen.

Over the next fortnight, pull up a deckchair in the square daily from midday to catch all the action from Wimbledon.

And on Tuesday, 2 July, enjoy a free broadcast of Bizet’s greatest opera Carmen, telling the story of the enigmatic and seductive Carmen and the dangerous passion she arouses in Don José. Soak up free culture on your doorstep: watch The Royal Opera’s fresh take on this much-loved opera, complete with flamenco dancers, bull fighters and a gorilla!

It will be followed on Tuesday, 9 July by The Marriage of Figaro, also streaming live from the Royal Opera House.

Revolution is in the air in The Royal Opera’s beautiful production of Mozart’s great comic opera. Colourful characters mix with intrigue, misunderstanding and forgiveness in a multitude of dramatic twists.

Figaro and Susanna plan to get married – but their master Count Almaviva has designs on Susanna and is determined to stop the wedding taking place. Meanwhile the page Cherubino’s passion for the ladies jeopardizes his job, and Countess Almaviva wants to regain her husband’s love.

Figaro, Susanna and the Countess plot to shame the Count and save Cherubino from banishment. But their plans don’t run smoothly, particularly when the elderly Marcellina tries to force Figaro to marry her. An astonishing revelation prevents this happening, but will the Count still find a way to thwart the wedding? And can the Countess win back her husband’s affection?

Both operas begin at 7pm, with pre-show content from 6.30pm.

Also this month join a Picnic in the Square on 15-17 July, from 12pm-3pm. Relax, ping-pong or picnic al-fresco during lunchtimes. Soak up the atmosphere with free Hammersmith BID deckchairs and picnic tables.

On Thursday 18 July from 6.30pm, join the fun and sing along with fun summer movie Mamma Mia! Here We go Again.

On 19 and 20 July Hammersmith BID and Lyric Hammersmith join forces for Lyric Fest, a two day festival on Lyric Square.

On Friday, enjoy a barbecue and drinks deals in the sun with local acoustic talent at the Hammersmith London Roof Garden before moving down to Lyric Square for live music, karaoke and DJ sets.

Saturday plays host to family fun, with a jam-packed programme of activities for the whole family, including face painting, circus acts, arts and crafts, and special performances of Bugsy Malone.

On Saturday 20, as part of the Mayor of London’s National Park City Festival, the Lyric Theatre will be holding tours of the Hammersmith BID and Lyric bee hives on between 11am and 4pm. These tours will be limited to eight persons at a time and booking is required via the Lyric's website.
