After receiving huge support from community who say he 'spreads sunshine'

Winston Barrett, a street cleaner in Fulham, has won a top award after receiving huge support from local residents who say he "brings sunshine" to our area.

Winston, 53, has worked for H&F Council’s refuse contractor Serco for six years, cleaning the area around Eel Brook Common and Fulham FC’s Craven Cottage ground.

Hot on the heels of last year’s winner Lazarus Eliodore, who is based at the depot in Hammersmith Park in Shepherd's Bush, Winston has scooped a Global Pulse Award for his excellent work at Serco’s annual awards ceremony.

When local residents from the areas Winston cleans learned he could be nominated for an award, Serco received a flood of nearly 40 letters from them commending the joyful and conscientious way he goes about his work.

"He’s much more than a road sweeper, he spreads sunshine and cheerfulness," wrote one resident.

Not only has Winston become a hugely popular figure in the local community, his hard work has helped significantly improve the cleanliness of the area.

"Winston’s personality is infectious and he puts a smile on the face of everyone he meets. The work he does isn’t glamorous but it makes a huge difference to local residents, so I’m really pleased to see him get the recognition he deserves," said Tom Carter, Serco’s operations manager for Hammersmith & Fulham.

Winston received his award from Serco Chief Executive Rupert Soames and Chairman Sir Roy Gardner this month at an event in Birmingham marking the company’s UK winners of its Global Pulse Awards.

The awards celebrate employees from among Serco’s 50,000 strong team around the world who have done extraordinary things for their colleagues, customers or communities.

Cllr Wesley Harcourt, H&F Cabinet Member for Environment, Transport and Residents’ Services added his congratulations, saying: " "We want to be the greenest borough in the country and we can’t achieve that without the care and dedication of people like Winston.

"I thank him for all his hard work, which residents have shown they appreciate, and congratulate him on his well-deserved award."
