Community special school, Woodlane High School in Du Cane Road has become the first school in London to receive a Healthy Schools London Gold Award for its work promoting healthy lifestyles.

On its website. the school says: " We are delighted to inform you that Woodlane High School is the first school in London to achieve the Healthy Schools Gold Award. We have been recognised as a school which provides a high level of support to all pupils, to ensure they live healthy and happy lifestyles.

" A big thank you to staff, parents and pupils for their continued efforts in this area."

Woodlane High School, for pupils aged 11 to 16, achieved the award after impressing organisers of the Healthy Schools London initiative, which aims to ensure children take care of their health as they grow up.

The initiative supports schools across the capital that are encouraging children to eat healthily and be active at and on the way to school. It also urges schools to play their part in helping children learn about their healthand make healthy lifestyle choices.

Woodlane High School worked with the Healthy Schools Partnership to become a silver award winner under the Healthy Schools London initiative, and this month became the first school in the capital to pick up a gold award.

The school was recognised for – among other things – increasing the number of pupils engaging in physical activity on a daily basis and taking part in a wide range of school sports competitions.

Woodlane pupils were recently selected to represent the borough in the London Youth Games where they won bronze for Boccia, silver in both tennis and athletics 100m, and gold in football.

The school also promotes healthy eating by providing pupils with free healthy breakfasts, offering balanced lunch options and giving fruit out at break and lunchtimes to pupils and staff. In addition it uses the curriculum to help promote healthy living – through technology lessons, science lessons, PE and PSHE lessons, including sex education. Extra-curricular activities include cooking clubs, gardening clubs and sports clubs.

14 schools across the borough are registered with the Healthy Schools London programme, with All Saints, Addison, Avonmore, Normand Croft, Wormholt Park and Fulham Cross schools achieving Bronze Awards and St Stephen's Primary School in Uxbridge Road achieving a Silver Award.
