Roads to be closed through the day as cyclists race through borough

The annual RideLondon cycling event comes through Hammersmith and Fulham on Sunday August 2, causing disruption for residents, motorists and other travellers.

Described as the the world’s greatest festival of cycling, Prudential RideLondon sees 95,000 riders participating in five events, offering spectators lining the streets a chance to cheer on the superstars of cycling, including Sir Bradley Wiggins, Mark Cavendish, Andre 'The Gorilla' Greipel, Laura Trott and Dani King, and support friends and family taking on the challenge of the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100.

On Saturday, events will take place in the centre of London, based around the Mall, while on Sunday, three events will be passing through our borough:

The Prudential Ridelondon-Surrey 100 will see 5,000+ amateur riders starting out at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park from 6am onwards in the mass sportive that last year raised a record-breaking £10 million for charity.

Prudential RideLondon Handcycle Classic will see 30 top handcyclists race 15 miles between Kingston upon Thames and the Mall.

The Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic, the final event of the day sees the world's best male cyclists race from London to Surrey and back, starting in Horse Guards Parade at 1.30pm. This event will be televised live on BBC TV.

Cyclists will ride along Talgarth Road and over the Hammersmith Flyover towards the Hogarth Roundabout on the outward route, which will result in local roads being closed from 5am until around 2.30pm.

On the return route, they will ride over Putney Bridge and through Fulham on New King's and King's Roads, with local roads shut from 7a till round 7.30pm.

Buses will be on diversion, and stations are expected to be very busy. Motorists will not be able to cross over Kings Road or New Kings Road in either direction. Wandsworth Bridge will be open for access egress only. Hammersmith Bridge will remain open, but is expected to be very busy.

" While this event is a great sporting spectacle, we appreciate that for some residents it will be a nuisance and cause disruption to their weekend," says Cllr Wesley Harcourt, H&F Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport, Environment and Residents’ Services.

" That’s why we are encouraging those affected to plan ahead and where possible to make alternative arrangements. On the day of the event, public transport, walking and cycling will be the best ways to get around the south of the borough."
