Hammersmith & Fulham Council has signed a contract with outsourcing company Veolia to run waste management in the borough for the next decade.

The new arrangement covers kerbside recycling and waste collections, bulky waste and street cleansing and includes a commitment to expand the current food waste recycling scheme to cover the whole borough.

Veolia will also be responsible for street cleansing services for major events taking place in the borough including the Boat Race, Queen’s Club tennis and around the three football stadiums on match days.

Veolia says it will be working with the council to develop infrastructure to allow electric vehicles to be used in its operations. The new contract stipulates that the council will pay for and own the new vehicles which will help the council in its bid to reach Net Zero.

Gavin Graveson, Veolia Senior Executive Vice President Northern Europe Zone said, “We are delighted to announce that we are the environmental partner of choice for Hammersmith & Fulham Council. The contract will significantly boost recycling rates across the borough, conserving resources in line with our purpose of ecological transformation.

“We are committed to launching social value initiatives within the community, such as introducing the Sustainability Fund to support local biodiversity and recycling projects, provide recruitment opportunities for long term unemployed residents and increase the number of apprentices.”

The contract began at the end of January and is for nine and three-quarter years with an option to extend for a further eight years.

Serco has handled the council’s waste management since 2008 when it was given a contract that was then worth £140 million. The contract was extended in 2014.
