Residents Invited to 'Walk Together Against Racism' on Sunday

With march from Shepherd's Bush Green to rally in Ravenscourt Park

Hammersmith and Fulham Council is inviting people to "walk together against racism and xenophobia" at a Unity Day march from Shepherd's Bush Green and rally in Ravenscourt Park this Sunday, 17 July.

The event will begin with a march against racism starting at 11.30 am on Shepherds Bush Green and making its way west along Goldhawk Road to Ravenscourt Park.

It will be followed with a celebration rally from 1pm till 4pm in Ravenscourt Park.

Everyone is welcome to show join this event end enjoy a full line-up of speakers, live music performances and food from around the world.

This inaugural event will mean parking suspensions and partial road closures along the route of the march.

There will be parking suspension from 8am to 2pm and partial road closures from 11am to 2pm, as follows:

Westbound Goldhawk Road from Shepherd Bush Green to Stamford Brook Road roundabout
Southbound Goldhawk Road from Stamford Brook Road roundabout to King Street
Eastbound King Street from Goldhawk junction to Ravenscourt Avenue
North/southbound Ravenscourt Avenue

There will also be a full road closure from 11am to 2pm on Ravenscourt Avenue.

Hammersmith and Fulham Council Leader, Cllr Stephen Cowan, says: " Generations of good, brave people fought to kick racism out of British society. If anyone had looked at the 'Isles of Wonder' we showcased to the world on 27 July 2012 they'd have believed our war had been won as that day, just four years ago, was the day this London Olympic opening ceremony put a lump in our throats and made our chests burst with pride.

" But racist incidents are on the increase. A small number of people unfortunately feel they have been given permission by recent events to let their inner ignorance speak out.

" That's just not the country we are and it certainly is not the country we are going to become.

" On Sunday, 17 July the vast majority of us will have a chance to stand up and state that we are proud of all the good people that have made their home in Hammersmith and Fulham: those who came from the other 27 EU countries, and those from everywhere else in the world. H&F's Unity Day will begin with a chance for us to walk together against racism and xenophobia. It will finish with a festival of celebration of the many cultures that make our London borough one of the most wonderful places to live anywhere in the world.
