PC Martin Wright injured officers enquiring about domestic assault
PC Martin Wright, a serving police constable based in Hammersmith and Fulham has been sentenced to a 12 month community order for two counts of assault on police at Guildford Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, August 16.
PC Wright, 39, was arrested following an incident on Sunday, 27 March, when police were called to a report of domestic assault at an address in Surrey. While the two constables were making their enquiries, PC Wright assaulted both of them.
One officer received injuries to his wrist and neck, the other sustained marks to his neck.
He was later charged on Thursday, June 9 with one count of domestic assault and two counts of assault on police.
The officer appeared at Guildford Magistrates' Court on Friday, August 12. No evidence was offered in relation to the domestic assault charge however, he was found guilty in relation to the second count of assault on police.
PC Wright previously appeared at Redhill Magistrates' Court on Thursday, June 23 and pleaded guilty to one count of assault on police and not guilty to the other two charges.
He was sentenced to a 12 month Community Order to include 25 days' rehabilitation. This will run concurrently against both charges.
In addition, PC Wright was fined £620 trial costs, £85 victim surcharge and £100 each compensation to both the police constables involved.
Detective Chief Superintendent Matt Gardner, OCU Commander of the Directorate of Professional Standards, said: "It is the duty of police to protect from harm, not to seek to cause it. It is deeply saddening that PC Wright behaved as he did - especially as someone who knows better than most of the challenges officers face when dealing with suspects."
Police say that now that criminal proceedings have concluded a misconduct review will take place.
The officer remains suspended from duty.
