Cut Price Parking Bays Created in South Fulham

"Stop and shop" bays designed to boost local shops in run-up to Christmas

If you are shopping in the Wandsworth Bridge Road area this Christmas, look out for special "stop and shop" discounted parking bays.

Throughout this month, shoppers will be able to park in 13 new discounted ‘stop and shop’ parking bays that have been created in the area around Wandsworth Bridge Road.

The bays, in controlled parking zones Z and Q are in Studdridge Street, Broughton Road Approach and Pearscroft Road. They cost just 40p an hour from Monday to Saturday, 9am-5pm, with a maximum one hour stay. 

Hammersmith and Fulham Council hopes that the changes will attract more customers to the street, which is well known for its interior design and independent stores – especially as the new bays come just in time for Christmas shopping.

The reduced price bays - down from £2.40 per hour - come following a lengthy council consultation with residents and businesses in the area. Hammersmith & Fulham Council has already introduced similar schemes in Goldhawk Road, Askew Road and Fulham Road, which continue to be popular with shoppers.

H&F Council’s cabinet member for transport and technical services, Cllr Victoria Brocklebank-Fowler says: " It has been difficult over the past few years for small businesses so these bays will help to boost passing and local trade. We have listened to what businesses have been telling us and, if our other similar schemes are anything to go by, these changes should help to improve things for our traders on Wandsworth Bridge Road.

" Local shops are central to our communities and we are doing all we can to ensure that these businesses remain in the area and continue to offer residents and shoppers a wide variety of goods and services, that is so rarely seen on our high streets today."    

People parking in the stop and shop bays must show a pay & display ticket from one of the new red ticket machines only. Residents living in the streets where the new bays are will still have the priority of parking near their homes.

As part of this scheme, the council has created four more general shared use parking bays, that residents, businesses or motorists showing pay and display tickets can use, by removing unnecessary stretches of yellow lines.

Jill Lee, owner of Artbeat, a print and framing business in Fulham Road, says her customers have been full of praise for the stop and shop bays. " A lot of my customers are very happy about the bays and are often saying that it’s helpful. I would certainly recommend it for any area where businesses need a bit of help."
