H&F Council Arranges for Repair of Sheen Cemetery Memorials

After 'mindless' vandalism leaves many headstones pushed over or damaged

Hammersmith & Fulham Council is arranging for memorials in North Sheen Cemetery to be repaired and re-set after they were damaged in an "appalling" act of vandalism.

Though it is south of the river, the 30 acre cemetery, also known as 'Fulham New' is managed by H&F Council, as is the adjoining Mortlake Cemetery, also known as 'Hammersmith New'.

On the night of Saturday August 13, vandals broke into the cemetery and pushed over around 50 headstones leaving a small number cracked and damaged.

The council says police are currently investigating the incident and have had a scenes of crime officer at site taking finger prints from the memorials affected.

It has arranged for a memorial mason to attend site this week with a view to re-setting those memorials pushed over and repair those that were damaged.

Cemetery staff are currently recording the number of those memorials that are affected and will be writing to the grave owners advising them of the vandalism and that steps are being taken to remedy the vandalism.

H&F Council Leader Stephen Cowan says: " This was an appalling act and our hearts go out to the families affected.

"We will do everything we can to catch the mindless vandals and we appeal for any information that might help the police."
