At Town Hall ceremony ahead of Armed Forces Day

A flag raising ceremony is being held on the roof of the town hall today, Friday June 27, to recognise the bravery of the men and women who served, and continue to serve, in the Armed Forces.

Ahead of Armed Forces Day on Saturday June 28, the Mayor of Hammersmith & Fulham, Cllr Mercy Umeh, is being joined by representatives from the Chelsea Pensioners, local army cadets and pupils from schools across the borough at Hammersmith Town Hall for the event.

The ceremony also marks the 70th anniversary of the Normandy landings.

Two army regiments are based in the borough – HQ (Westminster Dragoons) Squadron The Royal Yeomanry in Fulham, and B Company 4th Battalion The Parachute Regiment in White City.

Cllr Stephen Cowan, leader of Hammersmith & Fulham Council, says: "The men and women who serve, and have served, in our Armed Forces are a true inspiration. We are immensely proud of the two regiments that call H&F home, and want to make sure that they know how grateful we are for their selfless efforts.

"Events are being held across the capital to mark Armed Forces Day, giving us all opportunities to pause for a moment's reflection as a sign of respect to all those who protect us, have fought for our liberty and have laid down their lives in defence of our country.

“We need to ensure that those who have served us are served well by us when they return from conflict. To that end I have appointed Cllr Alan De’Ath as our armed forces representative to make sure this local authority does precisely that."

On Sunday, June 29, anyone crossing over Wandsworth Bridge will be able to attend an Armed Forces Day in Battersea Park. Taking place by the bandstand from 12pm to 4.30pm, the event features stalls and activities from the London Regiment, the Royal British Legion, the army cadets and the sea cadets. There will also be military music being played from the bandstand itself.
