Police investigating disappearance of Zubair Nur missing since January

Police say they are investigating the disappearance of local teenager, 19 year-old Zubair Nur, amidst fears that he may have travelled to Syria to try and join Islamic State.

Zubair's was the deputy head boy at Chelsea Academy in Lots Road, on the Fulham Chelsea borders and achieved good A-level grades before leaving last year and going to study for a BSc in petroleum geology at Royal Holloway, University of London at Egham in Surrey.

Zubair's mother, Muna, 43, who lives in Fulham, contacted police after Royal Holloway sent a letter saying he had stopped attending lectures in January.

A spokesman from the university said: “We carry out regular attendance checks and when staff were aware he was not attending we wrote home on February 2 and he has since been reported missing by the Metropolitan Police.

“He was only here for a term.”

Fellow former pupils described Zubair as a "normal" teenager who loved comedy.

But friends said they became concerned when he started praising extremists on Facebook. One told The Sun: " It set off alarm bells among people who knew him. He wasn’t known at all for causing trouble or having extreme views. He was a happy-go-lucky kid who loved Michael McIntyre."

Zubair's Facebook page reflects this with his favourites ranging from We, the Revolutionaries of this Ummah, Salahuddin Ayyubi - The Pride of Islam, Anwar Awlaki and Abu Waleed to Royal Holloway, University of London, The SPORT Bible, Lyell Geoscience Society - Royal Holloway, OwnagePranks, Michael McIntyre, RHUL Computing Society and RHUL Islamic Society.

A spokesman from the Metropolitan Police said that officers are currently investigating the disappearance of three teenagers from Fulham, Hackey and Greenwich, who have not been seen since January 14. He added: " One line of enquiry is that they have travelled to Syria."

An anti-radicalisation team from the Home Office has now been sent to Chelsea Academy to speak to sixth formers.
