Ex-Mayor Presents £50,000 to Walking with the Wounded

Funds raised last year when it was her chosen Mayoral charity

The ex-Mayor of Hammersmith & Fulham Council, Cllr Frances Stainton, has presented £50,126 to Walking with the Wounded, her chosen charity during her Mayoral year last year.

The money was raised in a series of mayoral events last year, including a gala dinner at Chelsea Football Club, the London Mayor’s Parade and dedicated bucket collections across the borough.

" The size of the cheque we have been able to pass on to this wonderful charity is a real tribute to the hard work and dedication of the scores of people in the borough who have given up their time and energy to help, including giving such generous donations," says Cllr Stainton.

"Fundraising takes a real can-do approach and I would like to thank everyone who has supported us."

The money will go towards the work the charity does to re-train and re-educate wounded servicemen and to help them find long term employment after they have left the Armed Forces.

The UK-based charity stages extreme expeditions to illustrate the determination and courage of our injured service personnel and to draw attention to the need to help in their career transition, and to raise significant funds for charity.

"These expeditions are a hugely impressive inspiration to those coping with both disability and injury and show what determination and a positive outlook can help people achieve, even in the most challenging circumstances," says Cllr Stainton.

"It is the spirit that has seen such impressive performances at the Paralympics where many of the athletes achieving amazing results are injured servicemen and women. They serve as inspiration to us all."

HRH Prince Harry, who is patron of the charity, took part in an ITV documentary following the Walking with the Wounded 2012 expedition to the North Pole to highlight what the charity does and the need for public support for our service heroes.

The money from the Mayor’s Charity Fund was presented by Cllr Stainton to Fergus Williams, Chief Operating Officer for Walking with the Wounded on September 5 at Hammersmith Town Hall. Fergus served in the Welsh Guards in the 1990s.
