Town Hall flags lowered to half mast
A former Mayor of Hammersmith & Fulham has died at the age of 74.
Eleanor Joan Caruana, known to her family and friends as Joan, served as a ward councillor for Normand ward from May 1978 until 2002. During that period, she was appointed Mayor on four separate occasions.
Mrs Caruana served on numerous committees, including social services policy, housing benefit review board, housing and the adoption panel. She was also chairman of the appeals committee from 1993 to 1994.
She was married to Carl who died in 2007. They had four children, two of whom still live in the borough. She also had three grandchildren and a great-granddaughter who was born earlier this month.
Cllr Alex Karmel, Mayor of the borough, said: "Everyone at the council is deeply saddened at the death of Mrs Caruana. I would like to extend my sincere condolences to her friends and family."
Joan's oldest son Steven Maynard, said: "Joan loved all her immediate family and also saw the people of the borough as an extension of that family. She served the residents of Hammersmith & Fulham all her working life with great pride and dignity.”
Joan Caruana died on Sunday April 25 at home in Fulham following a long battle against cancer.
As a mark of respect, the flag was lowered to half mast at Hammersmith Town Hall and Fulham Town Hall and her Town Hall portrait draped in black ribbon.
