Local Actress and Professor on Queen's Birthday Honours List


For services to drama and food allergy research

A veteran star of stage and screen and a professor with Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust are among local luminaries included in the 2013 Queen's Birthday Honours List.

Actress Claire Bloom, who lives in Fulham was awarded a CBE for services to drama. Claire, now aged 82 has acted for almost 70 years, from debuting on stage in the late 1940s to recent roles in Oscar winning film The King's Speech in 2010 and an appearance alongside David Tennant in a 2009 episode of Doctor Who.

Married three times, to actor Rod Steiger, producer Hillard Elkins and writer Philip Roth, she has also written two books about her colourful life.

Professor John Warner, a consultant paediatrician at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and a world expert on children’s allergies, has been awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to food allergy research.

Professor Warner, who is also a professor of paediatrics at Imperial College London, said he was honoured to receive the award. " It was unexpected and unasked for. I feel very flattered and honoured that my research and the research of my team has been recognised in this way."

Professor Warner has been involved in food allergy research over the past 25 years. He is a former member of the Advisory Committee on Novel Foods and Processes and some of his research was funded by the Food Standards Agency, an independent government agency responsible for food hygiene and safety.
