New GCSE Grading System Proves No Obstacle for Fulham School Pupils

'Impressive performance' sees high percentage scoring at least five nine to four grades

After impressive results achieved by H&F's A Level students, with a 97% pass rate, this week has seen equally upbeat news for pupils receiving GCSE results.

GCSE grades are awarded from nine to one, with nine, eight and seven ranging from what would have been A* to A in the old system, and four being similar to a C.

At London Oratory School in Fulham's Seagrave Road, one in ten passes was at the highest possible level of grade nine, and more than a quarter of all grades were at grade eight and above.

92% of pupils crossed the all-important threshold of five subjects at grade four and above.

"I am absolutely delighted that our pupils have moved
through their first major rites of passage with such flying colours," said Headmaster Daniel Wright.

"Such an impressive performance is a fitting tribute to the efforts of our ambitious and hard-working pupils, their supportive families and our committed and skilled staff."

At Lady Margaret School in Parsons Green, 61% of the girls attained the English Baccalaureate. These are girls who attained five GCSEs with a minimum of Grade four in English and Maths, and a minimum of a grade four in three other ‘E Bacc’ subjects, which are: Sciences, History, Geography, French and Spanish.

57% of grades in total were nine to seven, which would be A* to A in the old system.

The school said on its website: "These are excellent results and we are so proud of all girls in Year 11! Congratulations to everyone in Year 11, and, as for our A Level results, thank you to parents for their support and encouragement and to staff for their hard work and commitment to the girls."

Staff and pupils at Hurlingham Academy in Peterborough Road also have lots to celebrate, with the school clocking up its best ever GCSE results.

84% of students achieved five or more nine to four/A*-C grades including English and maths, under this year’s new GCSE grading structure. This is double the number who achieved the equivalent measure in 2014, just before the school joined United Learning and became an academy.

United Learning says wider improvements have also been achieved across the board at The Hurlingham Academy, including on the government’s combined English and maths measure. This year, 86% of students achieved at least a grade four in both subjects, and 64% achieved at least a five.

In addition, a number of students achieved multiple grade 9– the new highest level possible. A.

Leon Wilson, Principal of The Hurlingham Academy, said: "All our students can take great pride in their achievements today which are yet another indicator of how far we have come as a school. Our year on year success is testament to everyone’s efforts and hard work – students, staff, parents and governors.

"We have always known that this school had significant potential and it is such a pleasure to see this come to fruition. It is truly a school that London can be proud of.

"I know these results will provide further motivation for all our younger year groups, confident in the knowledge that they have the potential to achieve and indeed exceed today’s successes in the future."
