64 roads in borough identified for mains replacement
Motorists are being warned they face local traffic disruption throughout the summer as work to replace aging gas mains across the borough is continuing.
North London Gas Alliance (NLGA), a partnership between National Grid and Skanska, began replacing old cast iron pipes with plastic ones last month in some of the borough’s busiest roads.
Work in Goldhawk Road and Uxbridge Road will continue for another month and ongoing works in Fulham Palace Road, between Aspenlea Road and Lillie Road are
expected to be completed in the next fortnight.
The essential work forms part of National Grid’s national mains replacement programme, agreed by law with the Health and Safety Executive, to replace all metallic mains within 30 metres of buildings. A total of 64 roads in the borough identified for replacement work.
The next phase of the scheme will begin at the end of the month or in early July, in Fulham Palace Road – this time at the junction with Lillie Road. Silverton Road and Delorme Street will be closed to all traffic for five weeks, until the work finishes. The traffic island will be removed and the traffic light phases will remain unaltered so that vehicle flow can continue unaffected.
Once these works are completed there will be a westbound closure on Lillie Road, at the junction with North End Road up to Chesnut Alley, when Skanska begins working on two mains at the end of July. This five-week programme will see traffic diverted down North End Road and Dawes Road. Mulgrave Road will be closed at the junction of Lillie Road but access will be maintained to Chesnut Alley.
Pipes on Shepherds Bush Road will also be replaced. That work will last for eight months but work in the carriageway will not be carried out at the same time as improvements in Fulham Palace Road and Goldhawk Road. This will be carried out gradually in small sections, with the road remaining open to two-way traffic.
Other major roads that will be affected by essential gas works later on in the year include Gliddon Road, St Dunstans Road, Margravine Road, Margravine Gardens, Palliser Road and Colet Gardens.
National Grid construction operations engineer, Pat Nathan, said: " People can rest assured that we will continue to do all we can to complete this project as swiftly as possible and minimise any inconvenience. "
