Do You Feel Safe Crossing Hammersmith Bridge?
Local group ask cyclists and pedestrians for views
John Griffiths, chair of Hammersmith and Fulham Cyclists is asking cyclists and pedestrians to give their views on new road markings on Hammersmith Bridge.
He asks: " Do you walk or cycle over Hammersmith Bridge? There are four pinch points as you cross the bridge where cyclists have to merge with faster moving traffic.
" H&F Council has recently changed the road markings on the bridge in an effort to make it safer and to encourage less confident cyclists to use the road rather than the narrow footways.
" But does it work? hfcyclists have organised a survey to see how you would react to the markings.
" What position in the road would you take as you cycle across the bridge?"
The group, the local branch of the London Cycling Campaign, also introduce some new concepts for the bridge. These include "give way to cyclists" and "alternating flow" in order to promote discussion and to seek your views.
John says he would like responses from pedestrians and less confident cyclists as well as from cycling enthusiasts.
He adds: " Our aim is for all cyclists to be able to use the bridge without fear, and to keep the footways clear for pedestrians."

Hfcyclists will also be joining a Big Ride in the centre of London tomorrow, Saturday May 17, as part of the Space for Cycling campaign, which is calling for local streets in London to be made safe and inviting for everyone to cycle.
They will be leading a ride from their usual spot on Brook Green by the tennis courts (foot of Dunsany Road) with experienced cyclists providing a safe route to and from the ride itself which will be on closed roads, free of motor traffic and at a sedate, campaigning and enjoyable pace.
Everyone is welcome to join the ride and hfcyclists say: " We will aim to gather by 10AM then set off shortly thereafter. The main ride gathers at Park Lane around 11am then from midday will depart for a ride along motor traffic free roads towards the Embankment where there will be a rally from 1pm to 2pm.
" We will aim to provide a ride back to Brook Green upon completion of these events, due back by around 3pm latest. People are free to leave earlier should they wish, or to join us there, though given that last time saw 10,000 riders brave rain and we’re hoping for sun, it’s vital to be distinctive!"
