Thirteen locations already found for storage units available for bike owners rent
Cyclists looking for safe places to store their bikes will soon be able to hire space in new secure hangars.
The first secure on-street bike parking facilities are coming to Hammersmith & Fulham after a consultation held by the council last summer.
It asked residents whether they would like to see the new secure bike hangars on our streets and where they would like them and says the results were overwhelmingly positive.
Thirteen locations have now been provisionally identified for the new facilities which help people store their bikes safely and will hopefully encourage more cycling. The hardy metal units can securely house up to six residents’ bicycles.
The locations, which the council will confirm soon, have been selected based on where residents have said they want them, and where they’ll cause the minimum disruption to on-street parking.
The hangars will be rented by residents, who can register their details and receive a key to the unit. The annual rental fee, of less than £7 per month, includes all maintenance and administration.
The new storage units are being funded by Transport for London and the first are scheduled to be installed before March. More are planned for installation later this year.
“We are delighted that residents are keen to see these innovative storage systems in H&F and hope they’ll encourage more people to get cycling,” said Cllr Wesley Harcourt, H&F Cabinet Member for Environment, Transport and Residents’ Services.
“Not everyone has the space in their home for a bike, which may stop them buying or using one. These new hangars solve that problem by providing residents with an assurance their bike is stored safely away from the elements, vandals or thieves.”
H&F Council says the new storage units are a key part of the its Cycling Strategy which aims for 10% of all journeys in the borough to be made by bike.
To achieve this the council wants to make riding easier and less intimidating than it currently is and encouraging more people to get on a bike for the first time, or for the first time in a long time.

The council says they are one of several innovative options for bike parking being considered along with new ‘bicycle parklets’, the first of which was installed in Brackenbury Village last year.
