Keep the Kids Happy at Half Term

Healthy walks and spooky Halloween events

Wondering how to entertain the chlldren during the half term holidays?

Keep them occupied with a number of special events taking place during their week off school, from October 26 till 31.

Two special three hour, five and a half mile family walks have been arranged by Hammersmith and Fulham council’s sports development team on:

Tuesday October 27 - Meet at Queen Caroline Street, Hammersmith at 11am.

Thursday October 29 - Meet at Sainsbury’s, Ladbroke Grove at 11am. For more information on both of these walks call 07949 244253.

The council is also keen to hear from children about the new play equipment they would like to see in their favourite parks. Consultation events, which will offer lots of fun and games including den and model making, sports activities and bulb planting, are being held on every day of the holidays from 12pm to 5pm and all youngsters, particularly those aged between 8 and 13, are invited to attend.

These events will take place on:

Monday October 26 – Cathnor Park, Shepherds Bush
Tuesday October 27 – Margravine Gardens, Barons Court
Wednesday October 28 – Old Oak Common, near Wormwood Scrubs
Thursday October 29 – Hammersmith Park, Hammersmith
Friday October 30 – Hurlingham Park, Fulham

On Saturday, October 31, there will be exactly 1,000 days until the opening of the London 2012 Olympics and to celebrate, there will be family fun craft activities at Hammersmith's Lyric Square from 12noon to 4pm.

Half term week is also the lead up to Hallowe'en and Fulham Palace is hosting a spooky Torchlight Tour on Tuesday October 27. Hear stories of past goings on, including a few ghostly tales conducted by torchlight.

A family tour will start at 4.30pm, costing £5 per person, and an adult tour will follow at 7pm, costing £10 per person, including a drink on arrival.

On Thursday October 29 at 6pm, there is a cemetery walk at Fulham Cemetery on Fulham Palace Road. Opened in 1865, the cemetery caught the peak of the Victorian infatuation with death and positively weeps with neo-Gothic detail. At its prime, Fulham was receiving 2000 burials a year but today the site is slowly evolving into a Garden of Rest.

The walk is lead by local Blue Badge guide Simon Rodway and walkers should meet at the Fulham Palace Road entrance of the cemetery.

All of the borough’s libraries will be also getting into the Halloween spirit with creepy crafts and spine chilling stories. For more information, contact your local library.
