Bradmore Conservation Area to be Extended
Cabinet set to approve addition of roads to north and south
Hammersmith & Fulham Council will decide at a cabinet meeting on Monday, October 6 whether to add several new roads to Hammersmith's existing Bradmore Conservation Area following a campaign by residents and local heritage groups.
It is expected that they will agree to the extension, following a report by Adam O'Neill, Principal Urban Design and Conservation officer recommending approval and saying: " The proposed extension would establish a more logical boundary to the Conservation Area properly reflecting the extent of the special architectural and historic interest of the predominantly Victorian residential area between Goldhawk Road and Glenthorne Road in advance of public consultation on the Bradmore Conservation Area Character Profile.
" The
designation of an extension to the Bradmore Conservation Area would
enable the Council to exercise its planning powers in relation to
Conservation Areas within the extended area in order to preserve and
enhance its special architectural and historic interest."

The council says the extension will give better protection to hundreds of historic Victorian homes, with a cluster of new roads added to the south-east corner of the conservation area bordering Glenthorne Road, including all homes in Iffley Road, Kilmarsh Road, Overstone Road and Southerton Road.
In the north, more homes would be added in Brackenbury Gardens, Brackenbury Road, Sycamore Gardens and Goldhawk Road.
Tighter rules in conservation areas are designed to safeguard the character of places with a special architectural and historic interest. Residents must seek planning permission before building roof extensions or installing satellite dishes on the front of their homes.
Residents carried out a survey which found that 84% of those whose homes would fall within the wider Bradmore Conservation Area were in favour of joining. Brackenbury Residents’ Association, The Hammersmith Society and Hammersmith and Fulham Historic Building Group have all argued in favour of the extension.
Cllr Wesley Harcourt, H&F Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Transport and Residents’ Services, says " Residents have been vocal in arguing that these homes are an important part of our borough’s heritage and deserve to be protected. We are determined to ensure that local planning regulations are developed in close consultation with residents and reflect their views."
Rosemary Pettit, chair of the Hammersmith Society, said the group would be " particularly pleased" if councillors enable three streets - Overstone Road, Southerton Road and Kilmarsh Road – to "come in from the cold."
She said:" A long with the southern tip of Iffley Road, residents in these streets will in future benefit from protection against undesirable development. And they have worked for it - gathering support from neighbours, liaising with the council and contributing to the new character study of the conservation area."
