Council encourages gardeners to invest in their own bins
Hammersmith & Fulham Council is encouraging residents to get composting.
Spring is a perfect time of year for composting as there is a great deal of nutrient-rich waste available. A compost bin is a great way to combine tidying the garden while creating a good mulch to improve spring planting.
Composting also helps reduce the amount of waste sent for incineration and to help you get started, H&F Council has teamed up with GetComposting.com to offer household composters at subsidised prices, with a 220-litre model available for £12, instead of the usual £39.99.
A council spokesperson said: "You don’t need to be a keen gardener to compost, but it is a great way to recycle your garden waste. Not only that, it also helps to save council taxpayers’ money, by reducing the amount of waste that the council has to process, often at significant cost."
Households in England throw away around four million tonnes of waste every year that could have been composted. As well as green garden waste, you can compost fruit and vegetable peelings, egg shells, tea bags, pet fur and even shredded paper.
A household using a composter can help save the council approximately £142 for every tonne of waste diverted from incineration.
