Local Army Cadets Scoop Mayor's Cup

After competing in day of challenges at Burlington Danes Academy

Teams of young people from across Hammersmith and Fulham competed in an action packed day of activities on September 28, hoping to win the Mayor’s Challenge Cup.

The annual event was held at the Burlington Danes Academy in Wood Lane, Shepherds Bush.

The teams of youngsters are part of London’s Youth Organisations in Uniform YOU London programme, which was launched in January 2012 by the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson.

The aim of the day was to encourage youth organisations throughout London to engage in the YOU London Programme, and to set up programmes and events that demonstrate best practice across the groups in the London boroughs.

The challenges included tackling an inflatable obstacle course and command tasks which tested thinking and planning skills.

After a long hard day the Army Cadets were victorious, beating off some stiff competition to win three out of the five event shields. The Mayor of Hammersmith & Fulham, Councillor Frances Stainton presented the awards, with the Mayor’s Cup being presented to Sergeant Instructor Jamie Oliver.

He said: " Our cadets worked very hard on this and I am full of praise for their efforts. We look forward to defending the trophy in next year’s competition."

The Army Cadet Force (ACF) is the Army's national voluntary youth organisation with a membership of over 45,000 12 to 18 year old boys and girls. It operates in over 1700 locations all over the UK. Its aim is to inspire young people to achieve success in life, with a spirit of service to the Queen, Country and their local community alike.

In Middlesex and North West London ACF, which has its headquarters in Hammersmith, there are 34 Detachments, with over 1000 cadets, which meet twice a week in a range of locations. The cadets participate in a full range of activities which include sport, first aid, adventure training and community work, as well as military skills. The ACF are also major participants in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award.
