Which New Buildings Do Most to Enhance Hammersmith?

Hammersmith Society gives prizes to the best ... and wooden spoons to the worst!

The restoration of St Paul's Church and two new icons in Shepherds Bush, the Library and the Central Line Station are all in the running to win the Hammersmith Society's annual environment awards, which will be presented at the Society's 48th Annual Meeting on Thursday, May 27.

The meeting will take place from 6.30pm for 7pm at 22 St Peter's Square, formerly Island Studios and now the offices of architects Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands, which won last year's Conservation Award from the society.

The evening is open to both members and non-members and aims to give people the chance to meet and socialise and air their views on the issues facing Hammersmith. Wine and light refreshments will be available.

The environment awards, which are now in their 21st year, have previously recognised landmark buildings including The Ark in Talgarth Road plus smaller developments such as the Grove Neighbourhood Centre in Bradmore Park Road, Hammersmith, and the multiple award winning Maggie's Centre at Charing Cross Hospital in Fulham Palace Road.

And as well as giving prizes to the new buildings or gardens which have done most to enhance Hammersmith and Shepherds Bush neighbourhoods over the past year, the society also gives out wooden spoons to the eyesores which have done just the opposite.

This year, contenders include the advertising hoardings at the western end of the Hammersmith Flyover and the debris dumped by contractors at the west end of Shepherds Bush Green.
