Large Lorries and Trucks Banned from Hammersmith Grove

Road linking Shepherd's Bush and Hammersmith will no longer be used as cut-through

Residents living around Hammersmith Grove are celebrating after H&F Council took action to ban large lorries and trucks from the busy road.

Signs have gone up at each end of Hammersmith Grove advising drivers of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) they can no longer use the area as a cut-through.

The council says the ban is part of a suite of measures to improve local safety following joint working between Hammersmith Grove Residents’ Association and Hammersmith & Fulham Council.

Residents had campaigned for trucks to be banned from the road, which many drivers use to cut through from the north of the borough to the south.

As well as concerns over pollution, the bulky size and wide turning circles of the trucks had caused residents to fear they might lead to an accident, with many motorists being directed down Hammersmith Grove by their satellite navigation systems.

New bell bollards were recently installed at the junction with Trussley Road to prevent HGVs mounting the pavement when turning and new ‘raised entries’ will be installed at each end of Hammersmith Grove in the autumn.

H&F Council will be contacting sat-nav providers once the ban goes live to advise them to update their maps.

On their website, the residents assocation say: " We are happy to announce that Hammersmith and Fulham Council have agreed to install physical signage for the lorry restriction (7.5 Tonne +) in Hammersmith Grove. This was announced in the London Gazette on April 28th and will be picked up by all the satellite driving Apps.

"The council has also agreed to the narrowing of the north and south ends of Hammersmith Grove. Work will begin in August 2017.

"Stephen Cowan, our ward councillor and the Leader of the Council, has also introduced rental electric cars across the Borough and there are cars to rent at the north end of Hammersmith Grove/Astrop Terrace. " 

"We listened to our residents in Hammersmith Grove when they asked us for help and now we’re taking action," said Cllr Wesley Harcourt, H&F Cabinet Member for Environment, Transport and Residents’ Services.

"High volumes of traffic and HGVs have caused misery and concern for these residents for some time now, so we hope these new measures will help them feel safer about the roads near their homes."
