Community invited to join Planning Weekend

Local residents are invited to participate in planning the future of Hammersmith Embankment at a Community Planning Weekend taking place on Friday, November 26 and Saturday November, 27.

The event is organised by John Thompson and Partners, architects acting for St George, the company which recently bought the vacant land on Hammersmith Embankment, off Fulham Palace Road.

St George, which has already built a string of riverside developments including Imperial Wharf at the eastern border of Fulham and Battersea Reach by Wandsworth Bridge Road, reportedly paid over £80 million for the 7.25 acre site.

The site already has planning permission for a mixed use development and last month St George chairman sGreg Fry, Chairman of St George, said: "We are pleased to acquire this site as part of our portfolio of future regeneration projects in London.

" Our vision is to create a vibrant, mixed use community, commensurate with this strategic riverside location. We look forward to working with the Local Authority and other stakeholders to bring this exciting regeneration opportunity to fruition."

However, there is confusion over the future of Hammersmith Embankment, as around one third of this site, close to the existing Hammersmith Pumping Station on Chancellors Road, has been chosen by Thames Water as a preferred site for construction connected to the Thames Tunnel.

This proposed tunnel, nicknamed the Super Sewer, is a huge £3.6 billion project to upgrade London's Victorian sewage system. When completed in 2020, the tunnel will run for 20 miles, broadly following the path of the river.

Both Thames Water and developer St George are currently remaining tight-lipped about their plans for the site. However, organisers of the Community Planning Weekend say that participants will have the chance to take part in topic workshops, walkabouts and hands-on planning groups to explore local and site specific issues and possible solutions.

The session run from 2pm till 7pm on Friday and 11am till 3.30pm on Saturday and people are welcome to pop in for a short while, a few hours or for one or both days if they can. Team members will be on hand to explain what’s happening.

Following the Community Planning Weekend the design team, led by JTP, will analyse and summarise the outcomes and develop  what they call an illustrated Vision for Hammersmith Embankment and indicative masterplan which will be reported back to the local community at 7.30pm on Wednesday December at Melcombe Primary School, Colwith Road entrance, London W6.
