13 Local Parks Win Green Flag Status

Two newcomers added to list recognised for highest possible standards

13 local parks and open spaces in Hammersmith and Fulham have been awarded Green Flag status in 2017 - two more than last year.

The newcomers are Furnivall Gardens on Hammersmith's riverside and Wormholt Park in White City.

In Fulham, four parks have gained Green Flags - Bishop's Park and Fulham Palace, Normand, South and Hurlingham Parks.

The Green Flag scheme, now in its 21st year, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country. A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign that the park boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities.

The awards are judged by experts, who visit all the applicant sites and assess them against eight strict criteria, including horticultural standards, cleanliness, sustainability and community involvement.

The 13 sites awarded Green Flag status are:

  • Bishop’s Park and Fulham Palace
  • Hurlingham Park
  • South Park
  • Normand Park
  • Frank Banfield Park
  • Margravine Cemetery
  • Brook Green
  • Ravenscourt Park
  • St Peter’s Square
  • Norland North Open Space
  • Hammersmith Park
  • Furnivall Gardens
  • Wormholt Park

"We’re very proud that our wonderful green space has once again been recognised with a Green Flag," said Ruth Savery, Secretary of the Friends of Margravine Cemetery.

"The cemetery is a vital part of our community, providing space and calm in a busy part of London. Studies have shown that regular contact with trees appears to improve our immune system function and our wellbeing, and we know that thousands of people pass through the cemetery every day.

"We’re fortunate to have the support of H&F Council who understand the importance of the cemetery, and who provide two excellent gardeners to maintain it. We have many generous volunteers who help with additional gardening such as tree planting and maintenance, as well as organising activities for children and adults to enjoy."

Cllr Wesley Harcourt, H&F Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Transport and Residents’ Services added: "This superb news is testament to the hard work of the staff who maintain the parks and the local residents and ‘friends of’ groups that we work closely with to preserve them."
