Local Heroine Michelle Awarded British Empire Medal


Fulham mum' service to youth and community rewarded

Fulham resident Michelle Akintoye has been awarded a British Empire Medal for services to the youth and community sectors in West London in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.

Michelle, who lives in Wyford Road, is the founder of voluntary group Britafrique, who are committed to mentoring young people through education and training.

Mum of three Michelle, 43 was born in Nigeria but moved to Shepherd's Bush in 1992, then came to Fulham.

She joined a voluntary panel through social services to help children before becoming an LEA governor at Wood Lane High School in Shepherd's Bush.

Britafrique meets regularly at Bishop Creighton House in Lillie Road and aims to offer educational support to children aged between 5-13 and provides mentoring to teenagers and young adults to steer them away from crime and tackle poverty.

Michelle works with a number of primary and secondary schools in SW6 including Normand Croft, Henry Compton and Fulham Cross.
