Last Saturday evening, The Park Club staged a massive charity boxing event in aid of the NSPCC. The occasion is estimated to have raised around £25000 for the NSPCC.
This was the third such event at The Park Club and for the first time this year it was licensed to include novices and return matches between Hogarth Health Club and Park Club members as well as a Pro-Fight.
The proceedings were compered by Adrian Chiles with commentary from Sky Boxing’s Adam Smith and 13 time WBO Champion Johnny Nelson.
The organisers even received a text and donation of a one on one boxing session with David Haye (ex-World Cruiserweight & WBA Heavyweight Champion) at his Hayemaker Gym for the silent auction.
Sixteen Park Club and Hogarth Health Club members were in training for the last three months to take part in the event. In the audience was current World Lightweight Champion, Anthony Crolla, local hero and three times World Super Middleweight title challenger George Groves and former World Cruiserweight Champion, Glenn McCrory, who now commentates for Sky. From outside the world of boxing there was Jake Wood, Eastenders’ Max Branning.
The contestants have been training hard under the tutelage of Boxing Coaches Lee Denton and Ali Ahmed and faced three 2 minute rounds.
The 9 bouts included total novice member on member, a couple of return “grudge fights” plus a Pro Fight licensed under the German Boxing Board.
