New Book Published on History of St. Peter's Square

Learn about the 'other Bloomsbury set' and 'Free Love Corner'

A new local history book has recently been published about the St Peter's Square Conservation Area. The Conservation Area lies on the boundary of Hammersmith and Chiswick and has had a very interesting history since it was built in the 1830s - 1860s.

Keith Whitehouse, chair of the Fulham and Hammersmith Historical Society says in his foreword to the book, "There is a lot of very interesting detail on the residents, some of national note, that brings this history to life. This is a very detailed and fascinating book, a must not just for local residents but for those with a general interest in local history."

Former residents include Alec Guinness, Vanessa Redgrave, actors, and John Piper and Ruskin Spear, artists. In the 1930s it was described as containing 'another Bloomsbury set' and also as 'Free love corner'.

In the early 20th century, a developer tried to build over the Square, but luckily, it was saved and is now a public park.

For those looking for the Christmas present for someone interested in local history, the book is available at a price of £7.50 if collected from W6 9BQ or for £10 to include p&p.
