Maintenance Work On Elevated Section of M4

Overnight road closures between junctions 1 and 3

Routine maintenance work is required to repair deteriorating joints on the elevated section of the M4 between junctions 1 and 3.

Rain water collecting on the road surface has been leaking through to the joints and causing deterioration of the supports over a number of years. Repair work is essential to maintain the safe condition of the elevated section of the M4 for the future.

In order to do this and have easy access to the joints work has been phased over a number of years and the next phase of work is planned to start on 12 January 2009. The programme for this work has been planned to be flexible in order to accommodate weather conditions and any unforeseen incidents.

The Highways Agency will be making use of existing planned routine maintenance closures during this phase of working and although closures are planned they will only be implemented as necessary and essential in the period between 12 January and 24th April 2009.

What are the benefits of the work?

• Maintain the safe condition of the M4 elevated section
• Less disruption due to maintenance work in the future

How will the works affect me?

Work will take place overnight between 21:00 and 06:00 generally Monday to Thursday (excluding Bank Holidays) when traffic flows should be at their lowest which will ensure minimal disruption. A fully signed diversion route will be in place.

This is the current planned schedule of closures and has been provided in order to give our customers as much information as possible in order to help with journey planning decisions. However, the schedule may be subject to last minute changes due to unforeseen circumstances such as poor weather conditions or a serious incident on the motorway.
