Hammersmith Flyover Reopens
Hot weather allows works to be completed a week ahead of schedule
The flyover reopened at 5am on Friday morning bringing relief to travellers in West London. The good weather had allowed round the clock working to enable early completion of the waterproofing work on this key road artery.
The jams that resulted from the closure had been much less than expected but nevertheless diversions had led to severe delays on roads across the area with traffic queues much longer than the normal rush hour. The primary alternative route on the A40 had seen major hold-ups which were compounded by a series of incidents on that road.
A heavy presence of police and Community Support Officers in Hammersmith kept traffic flowing in that area.
Chris Calvi-Freeman, Head of Transport at Hounslow Council said, "It would appear that most motorists got the message and used a completely different route, took the tube, worked from home, or disappeared to France."
