Ken Livingstone talks rubbish
Mayor visits local recycling centre to hear how local residents are achieving such high recycling rates
Local
recyclers from CRAG (Chiswick Recycling Action Group) and BRAG (Brentford
Recycling Action Group) had an opportunity to talk rubbish with Ken
Livingstone on his recent visit to the borough. The mayor was visiting
the recently renovated Space Waye Reuse and Recycling Centre to see
why Hounslows residents are achieving some of the highest recycling
rates in the country.
Catherine
Woodman (pictured right with Ken), who represented CRAG at the visit,
said, It was good to see Ken Livingstone enthusiastic about recycling.
He seemed particularly interested in the Garden Waste scheme and the
first thing he asked to look at was the site's compost heap. He was
also interested to learn of the projects that BRAG and CRAG are involved
in at a local level.
During the visit, the mayor also spoke with environmental representatives
from Hounslow Council and West Waste who organise recycling and disposal
for the borough, as well as viewing a new educational classroom, assisted
by students of Cranford Community College. The students explained to
the Mayor how fun activities in the classroom demonstrate the importance
of recycling and its positive affects on the environment.
The £20,000 Space Waye classroom was opened in December 2002 to
provide an educational resource for children in Hounslows schools.
The classroom uses interactive games and activities to explain how important
recycling is for the environment but without being dull or boring.
