Gongs for Hammersmith Residents


A knighthood and OBE for services to publishing and advertising

Two gongs were awarded on New Year's Day to Hammersmith residents for services to advertising and publishing respectively.

 

Chris Powell was knighted for his services to the advertising industry.

 

Chair of the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA), Chris Powell is also chair of the Institute of Public Policy Research's think tank and the British Council's creative industry advisory group.

 

Closer to home, he also sits on the board of Hammersmith based arts centre Riverside Studios.

 

Chris Powell began his career in advertising, joining advertising agency BMP DDB at its inception in the late 1960s, when it produced the iconic advertisement for mashed potato product Smash, as well as masterminding campaigns such as the Cresta bear, the Hofmeister bear and John Smith's Arkwright.

Chris Powell then became BMP DDB’s Chief Executive and then its Chairman.

 

In 1995 he was appointed Deputy Chairman of Riverside Community Healthcare NHS Trust. From 2000 to 2002, Chris chaired Ealing and Hounslow Health Authority.

 

Victoria Barnsley, Chief Executive of HarperCollins UK was given an OBE for her services to publishing.

 

Mrs Barnsley has been in publishing for nearly 30 years and has been Publisher and Chief Executive of HarperCollins UK, based in Fulham Palace Road, for the past seven.

 

Prior to HarperCollins, Mrs Barnsley was Chair and Managing Director of Fourth Estate which she founded in 1984. Educated at Loughborough High School, Barnsley went on to read English at University College, London then reading for her MA at York University. She has an Honorary Doctorate from Oxford Brookes University and is a Fellow of UCL.

Mrs Barnsley sits on the Worldwide Board of HarperCollins Publishers Inc and is Chair of HarperCollins India Ltd.

A Trustee of the Tate, Chair of the Tate Britain Council and a Trustee of the National Gallery, Mrs Barnsley is married with one daughter.
