Much Loved Former Mayoress Dies

Dorothy Banfield, a much loved former councillor and mayoress has died.

Dorothy – known to all as Doris –  died on Tuesday, April 26. She was first a Mayoress in 1952-53 when her husband, Frank, was Mayor of Fulham. The park on Hammersmith Embankment was named Frank Banfield Park in his honour and as his widow, Doris attended the reopening of the park after its redevelopment in October 2008.

At the time she said: " I am very pleased with the new park. It looks lovely and I am sure that Frank would be proud of it."

Doris passed away in Charing Cross Hospital following a short illness and leaves her son Ken, younger brother Don, nephew John, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Doris was elected as a councillor for Crabtree Ward in May 1971 and served until May 1978 and was Mayoress to Hugh Duff from May 1977 to May 1978.

Mrs Banfield served on various committees for Health & Environment, Civic Amenities, Social Services, and those committees relating to children and the elderly.

She was the council's representative for Bishop Creighton House and for many years was a trustee and resident of the Lygon House Almshouses.

She was also a committed fundraising for Cancer Research UK and in June last year received a Flame of Hope Award for services to the charity.

Mayor of Hammersmith & Fulham Cllr Adronie Alford, who served with Mrs Banfield as a trustee of Lygon House, said: " Mrs Banfield was loved and respected by the trustees and residents of Lygon House. She was a long serving member of the community who cared deeply about the borough’s residents and gave her all to public service. "

The funeral service will take place on Thursday 19th May and will leave Lygon House, Fulham Palace Road SW6 at 11.15 am for a service at 12 noon at Mortlake Crematorium, Townmead Road, TW9 4EN.
