MP Andy Slaughter Hands Out Medals at Noise Olympics

Heathrow 'clear winner' at HACAN's event in Ravenscourt Park

Hammersmith MP Andy Slaughter has handed out the medals at the Noise Olympics, which were staged by campaign group HACAN in Ravenscourt Park yesterday, Thursday August 18.

At the event, staged to highlight the impact on local people of Heathrow's proposed expansion, Heathrow was the clear winner, winning the gold medal - or rather, golden ear-defenders.

MP Andy Slaughter presented the silver to Frankfurt and the bronze to Charles De Gaulle, while Gatwick trailed badly to finish in last position.

HACAN says Heathrow won the race because it overflies more people than any other airport in Europe.  According to European Commission figures over 725,000 residents are overflown, which is 28% of all people in Europe disturbed by aircraft noise.

HACAN chair John Stewart says: " This was a fun way of showing that Heathrow is already in a noise league of its own.  Residents are very worried what a third runway with an extra 250,000 flights a year will mean."
