Hammersmith residents told not to overindulge in F and C
Fish and chip lovers living in Hammersmith have been warned
byy environmental health officers that their favourite meal could lead to expanding waistbands.
A joint study carried out by six south west London councils found some of the fish and chip suppers tested contained over twice the recommended daily allowance of saturated fat.
The boroughs sampled included Hammersmith and Fulham,
Sutton, Richmond, Wandsworth, Merton and Kingston.
Officers said that eating fish and chips on a regular basis could mean people risked having an excessive amount of fats and salts in their diets, which could increase the risk of heart disease. They advised people to keep fish and chips as an occasional treat.
The worst fish and chips example tested contained the equivalent of around four tablespoons of frying oil.
Other fish and chip suppers had more than 100 per cent of the daily recommended allowance of fats, while almost all had high salt contents.
The study involved environmental health officers buying 24 portions of fish and chips from restaurants across south west London.
The dinners were then analysed for the proportion of fat, trans-fat and saturated fat.Ocotober 2, 2008
