The women's crews will clash blades again after public outcry after Cambridge sink

On Easter Sunday the Cancer Research Boat Races took place in very choppy conditions as Storm Katie approached the UK. Public sympathy has flooded in for the women's crew from Cambridge University who valiantly rowed on despite the red flag from the umpire as their boat filled with water. The tweet from the crew said it all:

The crew managed to finish despite their boat taking in more water than the pump who take out, crossing the line at Chiswick 24 lengths behind the Oxford crew.

The organisers and TV companies have now agreed that the race will be rerun - a first in the races' history. A spokesman said that there had been an overwhelming call from spectators from around the world that the race was 'unfair', 'cruel' and 'upsetting'. The crew received tweets of support and even a cake.

A date has yet to be agreed - finding the correct tides and both crews' availability is proving testing, but the organisers hope that the residents of Putney, Fulham, Barnes, Hammersmith and Chiswisk will show their support and return to the riverbank to show their support for the crews and recreate the atmosphere from Sunday.

A local TV cameraman told this website:
"If on the day there are not enough spectators along the riverbank, the studios will use technology to cut the banks shots from past races and live footage will be taken from the air focusing only on the boats".
