Linford Christie's niece is swapping her tracksuit for a ballgown.
A West Kensington beauty queen is following in the wake of her famous uncle, Linford Christie, by aiming to compete in the London 2012 Olympics.
Rachel Christie, 20, has won a place in the Miss England finals after being crowned Miss London City. But she is not just a pretty face. Miss Christie is also an athlete who enjoys competing in the heptathlon.
Rachel has two ambitions in life: to win Olympic gold and be crowned Miss World. A member of the Thames Valley Harriers, her uncle's athletics club, she is already a highly ranked athlete at 400 metres and the heptathlon. She plans to enter the next Olympic trials for Britain's athletes in two years' time.
Rachel trains at the Linford Christie stadium in Du Cane Road, and says she is inspired to succeed in memory of her father Russell Christie, who was fatally stabbed in Notting Hill when she was just eight-years-old.
Linford Christie maintains family connections to the Hammersmith and Fulham area. He grew up in White City and attended Canberra Primary School and Henry Compton School. He also trained with the Hammersmith Air Training Corps before taking up athletics seriously aged 19. He went on to win a gold medal in the 100m sprint.
Rachel Christie's event, the heptathlon, involves competing in 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200m long jump, javelin throw and 800m.
On her Miss England home page entry she states: "As an athlete I have acheived many thingssuch as awards and medals, competing is one of my greatest achievements because you learn something new everytime, I also have a trophy in Tai-Kwando.
"My ambition in life is to become a successful woman in whatever it is I choose to do. I want to win the Olympics, hopefully I will be entered for 2012."
