Local MP Andy Slaughter Condemns Prorogation of Parliament

Says Boris Johnson's move 'makes a complete mockery of our democracy'

Hammersmith MP Andy Slaughter has condemned Prime Minister Boris Johnson's controversial decision to suspend Parliament until a few weeks before the Brexit deadline.

On his Twitter account @hammersmithandy, the Labour MP said on 28 August: "I'm outraged by today's events. The prorogation of Parliament makes a complete mockery of our democracy and I will do whatever I can to ensure that Parliament stays sovereign."

His tweet received broad support from constituents saying they shared his outrage, including one who said: "Boris Johnson has declared war on Parliament."

A couple from Spain meanwhile, tweeted: "Hi Andy, partner and I both from Spain. We’ve been living in London for 8 years, 4 in Hammersmith. We work in big companies located in the area. We want to be able to carry on with our lives without worries. We don’t feel that way now. But we appreciate having you representing us."

Proroguing parliament means MPs will have less time to pass laws to stop a no-deal Brexit on October 31 would be cut.

House of Commons Speaker John Bercow has also said it is a "constitutional outrage".

In January this year, Andy Slaughter voted against the deal proposed by Theresa May, describing it as "terrible" and saying: " I believe staying in the EU is a fundamentally a good thing."

He also pointed out that 70% of his contituents voted to remain in June 2016 and added: " From my inbox of about 5,000 letters and emails, over 90% take the same view. Indeed, more than 20% of Hammersmith and Fulham residents are EU27 citizens, which is the third largest proportion anywhere in the UK."

In fact, 70.2% in our borough - 56,188 people - voted to Remain while 29.8% voted to Leave. You can see the full results and reactions at the time here.
