Spotlight on Parkinson's Disease this April with Home Instead

Ad - Help us support Parkinson’s UK with our fundraising initiative and open day on 11th April

April is a significant month for the Parkinson’s Disease community as it marks Parkinson’s awareness month and the birth month of James Parkinson, the pioneering figure who first identified symptoms of the condition.

James Parkinson, a renewed neurologist, scientist, geologist, and activist, documented "paralysis agitans" in 1817, now recognised as Parkinson’s disease. April 11th holds special significance as World Parkinson’s Day, an annual commemoration on James Parkinson’s birthday to honour his contributions and discoveries.

In the UK alone, 150,000 individuals live with Parkinson’s Disease. While advancing age is a notable risk factor, 5% to 10% of patients experience symptoms before reaching 60. Parkinson’s has affected notable figures such as Pope John Paul II, Muhammad Ali, and Sir Ian Holm.

Parkinson’s disease is a brain disorder that leads to unintended or uncontrollable movements. As the condition progresses, individuals may face challenges with mobility, speech, cognition, mood, sleep, memory, and energy levels.
