Passenger Numbers Down At Putney Station

Figures reduce but the station remains busiest station in the UK

Putney Station continues to be a busy station with 8.6 million passengers using it and is the 53rd most used station in the UK according to figures released this week.

There has been a drop of 2.1% in passenger numbers down from 8.88m last year and 8.7m over the same period (from April to March) 2017-18. This excludes disruption from the strikes in December.

Passengers have been complaining about overcrowding, lack of punctuality and ever rising fares on the network.

Following the recent publication of South Western Railway’s (SWR) latest accounts which show that the train operating company is making substantial losses we asked the company to comment on the passenger figures.

A spokesperson for South Western Railway attributed the reduction to strike action on the line and told this website: “Since the start of the franchise, our passengers have been impacted by 66 days of strike action which has unfortunately affected services.

“This year, passengers on our suburban routes will start to see the benefits of our £895m investment in Class 701 trains that will run on suburban routes and serve passengers in Putney.”
