Positively Putney the Town Centre BID pledged £20,000 towards the council's policy to 'revamp Putney High Street', both to improve air quality and the aesthetics of Putney town centre. The results are the two parklets that have appeared on Montserrat Road and Felsham Road.
The concept is to offer shoppers and visitors an attractive urban gardens and welcoming space to take the weight off their feet. However, some residents are concerned that they will draw unwelcome use. On the forum Clifford Cowell described the parklets as: "An assemblage of seating and planting offering an attractive place to congregate, erect plastic sheeting cover, sleep, drink and generally make an obnoxious nuisance to diners at Wagamamas, passers by and customers of the fruit and veg stall which operates there each weekend."
Nicola Grant, Executive Director of Positively Putney said: "We think they are a great addition to the Putney streetscape and are for everybody in the community to enjoy, whether they want to buy a take away or a coffee and sit and enjoy it, or just need a rest whilst passing. Please just be mindful of social distancing whilst you use them."
Leader of the Council, Ravi Govindia commented: Council leader Ravi Govindia said: “These are delightful additions to the high street. I am sure they will be welcomed by both residents and businesses alike.
“As we emerge into a post Coronavirus world, it is important that councils work closely with local businesses, residents and community groups to ensure the continued vibrancy of our town centres and high streets, to support the local economy and protect jobs.
Another lockdown addition to the area is the two tier cycle parking system on
Disraeli Road to encourage more people to cycle to the area.
Ravi Govindia continued: “We are committed to making Putney High Street safer and more attractive. This includes making it more accessible for pedestrians and cyclists and working with partners like TfL to reduce the traffic congestion that is an issue in the town centre.”
